Domino
The club has lost one of its most familiar riders of the past 15 years. We have learned that Domino died in August following an accident at home. Domino, who changed his name by deed pole, was an enthusiast who bordered on obsessive at times. He was a Red and Black Run regular during the 2010s and bought into the all-weather spirit that we maintained through the decade; he was proud to have been present when hypothermia struck fellow riders in the icy winter depths.
He had a penchant for beautiful, expensive bikes with Wilier being his favourite. He liked to accessorise and tinker with them for marginal gains, his weight-saving investment in a titanium jockey wheel encapsulates the lengths he would go to.
Domino supported our time trial series, he would accompany younger riders to help them get started and would drag people out for 2-Up challenges. He loved sportives, including the Coast to Coast challenge that he did with fellow members, and gave his finisher medals pride of place at home. He was always engaging, encouraging and fun to be around.
He was a nature boy; a bird watcher and a beekeeper. As a handyman, he could turn his hand to anything. He had once turned down a chance to work on James Bond sets, but he did work on several of our houses.
Like many of us, cycling was an important part of Domino’s life for fitness, health, mental health, friendship and escape. In recent years, a bad hip was compounded by a liver problem that prevented him from having surgery. This kept him off the bike(s), which, in turn, exacerbated his health and well-being issues. Fellow club members were among those who tried to support him; for them, the loss is especially acute. Now, we join them in remembering the happy times, of which there so many. We have lost a great rider and clubmate.
