HAPPY NEW YEAR

The year has started with a very bright day and with 12 riders taking part it was better than last year

Although the grass verge is even worse, but I did learn from my mistake and parked on the concrete

Well done to V. C. Jubilee who lead us home taking the first and second places

1st Ben Miller (VCJ) 25.35, 2nd Charlie Heffernan (VCJ) 27.19, 3rd Roy Page 27.37

Alan Bowry 28.23, Elaine Scott 29.38, Sally Page 33.38 and Barry Deacon 34.31 and Ben Cook DNF

BEST OF THE REST D. Galle (Horsham Cycling) 28.11, Jane Priddis (Steyning AC) 29.18, Bjorn Svetens (Private) 29.35 and Dennis Worster (Redhill C C) 38.40

All in all a good morning and with the up and coming talent from VCJ starting the year so strongly, it looks like an interesting season ahead

BECC had better look out the next generation is nipping at your heels

My Thanks to the team of Rick Stringer for starting and Keith Balcombe for pushing off and the signs

Then with their customary hospitality Bob and Collette Harber opened their home and their fridge to us for a smashing lunch

They are generosity personified and we all love the chance to unwind and catch up after Christmas, and Collette’s cooking as always was delicious

Don’t forget the Early Season Tea on the 13th January at Washington Village Hall from 3pm – 5pm

It’s a real treat to meet and chat over a cuppa and slice of cake with old friends.

There will be a quiz and raffle so come along and bring the kids

We have an early season 5 mile ‘leg loosener’ on 15th April; start at 6.30pm at Wappingham manor, with the evening 10’s starting on the 22nd April.

Our annual Dinner & Dance is on 23rd February contact Dick Jones for tickets, a good night with plenty of laughs is guaranteed

I hope that the season brings you all personal bests

Keep you head up

15 April

It feels like another year another new 5 mile TT course, but this one is really nice and it’s the one we will be using in the future.

The weather was smashing; bright and sunny, still cold but everything you could ask for in an early season evening event

Undoubtedly the most memorable thing of the evening for me was the call from Sally to Dave when I needed something done and one that I will be using forever more was “DAVE JOB” and the willingness of Dave to do anything requested.

The NEW course record hold is ---Steve Woodbridge with an amazing 11.17 (which is exactly what he did last year - spooky)

There were 21 riders 16 of which were from BECC and VCJ which is fantastic, welcome to new members Glen Still and Graham Rees

1st Steve Woodbridge 11.70, 2nd Ben Miller (VCJ) 12.06, 3rd Stu White 12.14

Rob Luff 12.28, Roy Page 12.49, Rob Merrington 12.58, Graham Rees 13.01. Rupert Coombes 13.39, Chris Shearn 13.56 Keith Balcombe 14.02, Elaine Scott 14.09, Ben Gerrey (VCJ) 14.11, Glen Still 14.26, Amy Jacobs (VCJ) 15.33, Sally Page 15.43, Ben Cook 15.44

BEST FO THE REST
Tom Shearn (Cambridge University CC) and Stuart Edmonds (Sussex Nomads) 12.01, Adrian Brown (Steyning AC) 12.32, Nick Butcher (SWRC) 13.58, Sue Ford-Dunn (Steyning AC) 15.36

My thanks go this week to Dave Gerrey and Rick Stringer for starting, Ian Essex for pushing off, Keith for the signs

Also thanks to Mike Anton for taking some great photo, see his website link Mike Anton and go to our event.

And finally my huge thanks go to Dave and Keith for coming to rescue me from the ditch I managed to get my car stuck into at the finish, Dave towed me out which is over and about the call of duty

See you next week, at the Heath centre car park off Tanyard Lane in Steyning, which worked really well last night, the event will start at 6.45pm at Hamm Farm

First I would like to make an amendment from last week Glen Still did 14.26 not 16.26 sorry for the mistake (Sal has updated above)

Welcome back to a couple of old members Pete Fray and Bob Davies, and new member Roger Burrows

1st Steve Woodbridge 23.03, 2nd George Higgs 23.30, 3rd Stu White 23.47,

My thanks go to this weeks team, Val at the start Rick pushing off and Keith doing the signs

For the next 2 weeks I’ll be on sick leave after a minor knee operation so I leave you all in the capable hands of Rick and Val Stringer & John Roberts doing the timing, Sally Page signing on and Keith Balcombe the signs and anything else that needs doing at the start.

Our ‘Come and Try It’ event is on the 10th June and we will be looking for accompanying rider for the 3.5 mile TT

We do this event every year because it gives the youngsters from VC Jubilee and elsewhere, who had not done any racing before, the chance to race on the road, in as safe an environment as we can make it, while giving them the excitement of doing an actual time trial event

The juniors are always on the front and only their time counts so it’s completely their race, the accompanying rider stays behind and protects them, keeps their momentum going by shouting encouragement, advices on riding technique and strategy and encourages them from doing something in the excitement of the moment, that could lead to an accident

I have one marshal (Dick Jones) already at the Shoreham RAB (10 mile turn) and need another one for the Bramber RAB (3.5 mile turn) and 2 pushers off

So please come to the sign-on car park and offer all your help and support to Keith and Sally

See you on the 17th June

3 June

Sally here - so the reports wont be as good as Su's, all our regards to her and hoping for a quick recovery.

Nearly didn't start the event tonight due to a road accident by the Beeding/Cement works roundabout, but luckily it had cleared just in time for us to start with no problems.

21 riders tonight, and many thanks to Rick and Val for doing timing at start and finish due to Johns wifes operation, again our best wishes to her, and thanks to Keith for all the signs.

Only one non-finisher was Chris who punctured by the cement works, and it was ages before anyone mentioned that someone was walking back, to me or anyone else, so as soon as I heard I headed out to pick him up. He'd made it all the way back to Bramber Castle, with sore feet, but relieved of a lift for the final stretch.

Please look out for this and let someone know soon as possible so they can get picked up, I'm sure you would want that. But also make it known you might need a lift, apparently not many people saw Chris as he was wearing black, but the big number on the back must have helped.

1st Steve Woodbridge 23.16, 2nd Lawrence Clifford 23.17, 3rd Stu White 24.00
Chris Hodge 24.27, Ben Miller (VCJ) 25.00, Roy Page 25.16, Nick Smith (VCJ) 25.27, Glenn Still 26.30, Keith Balcombe 27.19, Elaine Scott 28.26, Chris Shearn DNF.

BEST OF THE REST
Paul Byford (GS Stella) 22.53, Adrian Rogers (WECC) 22.59, Mark Paton (Sussex Nomads) 23.16

See all the times: >>here

It'll be me again next week for the Come and Try It 3.5m (for those that haven't done a solo event before) or the 10m Time Trial - starts at 7pm, hope some of you could do your warm up ride following a rider doing the 3.5m please let me know at the start.

Come and Try it

Sally again - hopefully Su will be back next week and it will be a nice and calm sign on, apologies for any confusion this week, spot the "newbie", its probably not often you have to sign on in reverse time order! But there were 39 of you this week, and we were running out of numbers and I needed to keep some slots free early on for the Come and Try It. So it was a big night, and good weather even though it was a bit windy. Well done to all the Come and Try Its, and everyone else; times were good.

Many thanks to Rick, Val and John for timekeeping, Dave for pushing off, Keith for the signs, Wendy and Dick for marshalling - couldn't have done it without you all.

1 July

We had out 1st TT of the season on the Washing ton course this week and again the weather was lovely, with just a light breeze, which I must say along the A24 means wind in both directions as there is nowhere to hide on those long straight stretches

Most people think that this course is a little faster than the G10/97 and looking at the times it seems that a lot of riders did do about 30+ seconds quicker but not all by any means

Another good turn out with 33 riders and 15 of which where from BECC

1st Lawrence Clifford 22.16, 2nd Stu White 22.40 (well done on a new PB), 3rd Chris Hodge 23.18

Ben Miller (VCJ) 23.55, Simon Roberts 23.55 (Oh watch these two, there was 4 sec between them last week, same time this), Roy Page 24.00, Charlie Heffernan (VCJ) 24.03, Nick Smith (VCJ) 24.42, Chris Shearn 25.24, Rob Merrington 25.32, Alan Bowry 25.48, Rupert Coombes 26.09, Glen Still 26.22, Keith Balcombe 26.50 and Elaine Scott 27.06.

BEST OF THE REST
Dan Paine (G.S.Stella) 21.05, Karl Robertson (WECC) 21.27 (well done on a new PB) Mark Paton (Sussex Nomads) 22.23, Ishmael Burdeau (Agiskauiwer.com) 23.02, & Simon Letts (WECC) 23.12

A couple of riders went off course, I do have maps in my box if they are need in two weeks time if needed

My thanks this week go to Keith for starting and the signs and Mike Murray for pushing off

Gill continues to get slowly better, with John giving us regular updates on her progress and we all send her our best wishes.

Rick and Val are in France on a well deserved holiday

Next week it’s the Interclub against G. S. Stella and there will be prizes.

Again it’s a team effort so lets bring out the big guns (Dan is out and about on a day trip to France on Monday and the wine is bound to flow so I see an opening for us to shine J ), last week shows we lost the individual interclub competition but ended up winning the team prize
