Thursday 1 January - 10m Steyning

It was great to see so many riders in such a windy day, but at least the wind kept the rain away! and a lovely lunch to look forward too at Bob and Colette's. 11 riders decided that the New Year needed to be 'kick-started' by spending only £1.50 (what brilliant value I hear you all say) and enjoying a real 'cobweb clearing' race.
Charlie Parsons won with a very impressive 24.10 (what he needs is a few more mince pies with bandy cream to get him really fit for the new season). Paul Gosling 2nd with 25.56, and Mike Murray 3rd with 27.12, Roy Page 28.11, Ian Essex 28.26, Jon Hayes 28.30, Keith Balcombe 29.45 and Andy Attwood 31.34.
BEST OF THE REST Stuart Fahey (B'ton Mitre) 25.31
Andy looked splendid all in black and wearing bowler hat and riding a beautifully restored 'sit up and beg' bike, he has started another club called Coffin Dodgers CC, and we look forward to seeing him on a variety of Vanessa's bikes during the coming year as SCA President he does have a certain reputation to uphold and has started the year as he means to go on. And how we all laughed when Andy lost his bowler hat just of the start and I feel a special mention should go to Val Stringer who ran down the road to rescue it before a car ran it over.
Thank to Rick Stringer for pushing off, we almost had more spectators than riders, which a testament to Colette's cooking.
Also I would like to thank Sally Page who came and found me walking back to the start 'cos I was expecting Keith to come get me and he thought someone else would pick me up, so I was left to make my own way back after the race. "What's he like!"
Now down to the proper business of Brighton Excelsior CC which is eating and drinking and just hanging with good friends that we haven't seen since before Christmas, Bob and Colette again opened their home to us and loads of their friends and it was great to see Simon and Caroline Birnstingl and Mark and Alison Radley again. The food was tasty and plentiful, and I had a great idea for a club dinner competition so when you I see you all next on 28th February at the Dudley make sure you all try and guess who's who. Don't forget the clubs evening race series start on 20th April at Steyning at 7pm although I might see some of you before that at an early season event.
Lets make 2004 a really safe one, full 'personal bests'.

Tuesday 20 April - 10m Steyning

Well another evening 10 series has started and all the excitement of first event was very much in evidence.
And it was an excellent turn out even though the evening was very cold and grey, and the showers that had been threatening started intermittently throughout the race its self.
Charlie Parson won easily with 24.02, and 2nd was Paul Gosling on 24.52, while Matt Howard from VC Jubilee was 3rd with a very impressive 26.26. New member Richard Clowes was just one second behind Matt with 26.27 well done to him and welcome to the BEST CLUB IN SUSSEX!!!! Keith Balcombe 26.33, Stan Cox 26.52, Roy Page 27.11, Neil Garrett 28.05, Malcolm Law 28.07 and Elaine Scott 29.45
BEST OF THE REST Chris White (Worthing Excel) 24.11 and Markus Steinhauser (Team Viper) 25.21
It was not an easy night so well done everyone.
After the event we had a presentation to Charlie of his Gold Standards Certificates from last year, watch out for the photos on the web page .
To register for the Time Standard Certificates, costs just £5 and that covers all distances. My thanks to Keith Balcombe for doing such a super job of designing and framing the certificates, they really are something to be proud of. See me after any race to resister.
As most of you know VC Jubilee is our youth section and its great to see Matt doing so well, he and the other members of VC Jubilee all of which are under 18 have a very full and varied programme and their web page can be accessed via a link from ours, its well worth logging on and seeing what the youth of today are up to, they are the future of our sport, and its good to see its in such safe hands.
Also a date for your dairy Preston Park Track starts on 5th May and its free for spectators, come down and see for yourself what fun can be had, the added bonus is there is tea and buns available, and there is nothing nicer on a warm & sunny evening sitting with friends watching someone else sweat.
We try as a club to keep our members past and present informed of how we are and what we are doing, if you have any news that you would like put on the web page see Sally Page, its an excellent way of getting in touch with old friends or making new ones, and we have had feedback that it’s read regularly by people from around the corner and around the world.
Also we are starting a "For Sale" section, so it’s also a way to make some extra cash and pick up a bargain.

Tuesday 27 April - 10m Steyning

While I was sitting waiting for everyone to turn up eating my sandwich the skies opened and we had thunder and lightning and I thought the event would surly be cancelled, but about 6.15 the rain stopped and although it very gloomy and getting darker by the minute it was dry. We had a good turn out with 23 riders, and people said it was quite a good night.
1st was Charlie Parson 23.52, 2nd Roy Page 25.12 and 3rd Keith Balcombe 25.44. Richard Clowes 25.58 (glad to see we did not put him off and he came back for a second week, bringing a friend Jem Kelly) Stan Cox 26.27 not bad considering he had spend the afternoon in the dentist chair, Alan Bowry 26.50 which is fantastic after his knee problems of last year. Steve Flowers 26.51, Steve has just joined us from Central Sussex and its great to have him in the club, John Scott 26.55, John & Elaine are going to Madeira for the World Championships next week, so look out for their results on the web page, GOOD LUCK to them both, Neil Garrett 27.15 again a good time considering that he had keyhole surgery last year on his knee, Bob Harber 28.14
BEST OF THE REST Chris White (Worthing) 23.24, Jay Chisnall (Team Dynamic) 24.21
I have to say that the atmosphere last night was super everyone was in a good mood, which makes it one of the main reasons why I love to be involved with the sport.
Every year one number seem to have a life of its own and this year it's No 13, so I thought I would keep a dairy of its exploits during the season, last week it hid from me and the 13th rider had to wear no 33 for the race, and only revealed itself when I had cleared everything out of my boot and emptied my event box, well yesterday it thought it would be fun to get locked in Stan's car. After the event Stan put his bike into his car and just closed the boot only to get that sinking feeling as he realised that the keys were inside as well.
The AA had to be called and at 8.50pm turned up and let him in which frighteningly only took the guy about 1minuite.
So what adventures will no 13 have over the following weeks log on to find out.

Tuesday 4 May - 10m Steyning

Well where to start; the weather just clearing up in time for the race and then starting to rain as we had all finished looking at the times and were just getting into our cars to go home, Keith getting stuck in the mud and having to be pulled out by Tony Wright using Sue Graysmark 4 x 4, Neil Garrett punchering on the start line, Stan Cox only getting to the first RAB as his seat pin slipped.
The race with only 9 starters was very uneventful after all that, I can assure you.
Great to see Mike Murray 23.01 out and about as he is getting himself all geared up for the National in June, 2nd was Richard Clowes 25.59, 3rd Keith Balcombe 26.17, 4th Stephen Flowers 26.43 and 5th Malcolm Law 27.16. Stan Cox DNF.
BEST OF THE REST Tony Wright (Phoenix) 26.49, Sue Graysmark (Amphibians 2 Tri) 29.49 and Sarah Hughes (Phoenix) 31.31.
Keith wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone, which I have to say, was EVERYONE there for helping him get his great big white van out of the mud at the end of the lay-by.
We all pushed and then pulled and then used my sport towels to try and get some tyre grip and then along came out knights in shinning light grey metal and with the tow rope only breaking once but with lots of wheel spin and everyone getting very muddy, we finally got him free PHEW!!!!!
See you all next week.

Tuesday 11 May - 16.5m Steyning

A 16.5 is a little different and we do like to make the evening series as interesting as possible. We had a good field of 25 riders and the weather although always looking like it was going to rain held off all night.
Mike Murray won with a very impressive 37.28, 2nd Charlie Parsons 40.14 and 3rd Rod Luff 40.28.
Paul Gosling 41.17, Roy Page 41.27, Jon Hayes 41.55, Andy Attwood 43.20, Richard Clowes 43.34, Keith Balcombe 43.46 Alan Bowry 44.38, Stan Cox 45.22 Neil Garrett 46.21 and Bob Harber 48.45.
BEST OF THE REST Steve Geran (GS Stella) 36.31 and Chris Lord (In Gear) 37.58.
We have had over the last few weeks Tamar and Sophie Coleman from Lewes Wanderers join us doing 2 up's as Sophie is only 13, and they are getting faster every week and this week they did 48.36 so well done to them and Sophie is obviously one to watch out for in the future. Its always good to see youngsters keen on doing any sport and they need all the encouragement they can get and a safe and enjoyable atmosphere in which to participate in, so anyone that can get down to Preston Park track on Wednesday evening during the summer to see VC Jubilee and all other kids riding their hearts out it's a real inspiration.
Don't forget I need lots of help on 8th June for the 'Come & Try it' with marshals and accompanying riders for up to 15 youngsters, you can use the 3.5 mile race as your warm up and then do the normal 10 mile event afterwards, it's another way of giving the kids a chance to get some good road skills and keep them safe all at the same time.

Tuesday 18 May - 10m Steyning

PHEW WHAT A SCORCHER!!!!
The good weather brought out the crowds and with 28 riders, one of our best nights so far, some of the riders got confused 'cos it wasn't raining or overcast, but they soon got into the swing, but I warned them not to get used to it.
Great times done by all and everyone seemed so jolly it was a real pleasure to be there.
1st was Mike Murray 22.23, 2nd Rob Luff 23.14 and 3rd Charlie Parsons 23.47.
Roy Page 24.28, Stan Cox 25.22, Steve Flowers 25.30, Keith Balcombe 25.58, Alan Bowry 26.12, Neil Garrett 26.22, Elaine Scott 26.53, joint 11th Bob Harber and Malcolm Law 27.05,
VC Jubilee new member Tom Shearn 24.07 and Peter Mitchell 27.36
We had another junior ride tonight from Switzerland Luthy Beroit 17 (Phoenix) 24.25
BEST OF THE REST Chris Lord (In Gear) 22.04, John Limpus (G. S. Stella) 22.35
A couple of our fast boys broke the hour last weekend, Charlie Parsons 59.20 on the Bognor course and Mike Murray 57.08 in the Worthing open 25, WELL DONE its great to have 2 such good riders in the club, we all know that everyone is the club is valued equally but its still nice to have two of our popular fast men doing so well and bringing such good publicity to us as a club, and it gives the rest of the club riders someone to chase and compare themselves too on a weekly basis.
Sometimes when we all meet on a Tuesday for the evening race or a Sunday at an Open event I don't get around to talking to everyone what with one thing and another, which is why its so nice to see you at club nights or down the Preston Park track during the summer when we have a more time for chatting.
So if I haven't told you all what a great bunch you are lately its not because I don't care.
Don't forget it's a 2 up next week, and going by the times this week, some likely pairs spring to mind Rob and Charlie for a start could do really well, Neil and Alan also could make a good pair, Stan and Keith are doing similar times at the moment and could be the ones to watch.
Also don't forget we are back on the Washington course on the 1st June, fingers crossed it is road works free!
8th June it's the 'Come & Try It' be prepared to lend a hand and stay for the prizes presentation afterwards.

Tuesday 25 May - 10m Steyning - 2 up

Well what can I say we have never had so many people turn up for one of our evening 10's, 40 riders and I had to unfortunately turn some riders away, it felt like a festival and the times reflected the quality of the evening. The weather was clear and very bright which all added up to a fast and fun evening. We had 14 pairs and 12 solos and the times are as follows:
BECC 2up Times: 1st Andy Attwood and Rob Luff 23.26, 2nd Roy Page and Charlie Parsons 23.29, Charlie has had laryngitis for over 3 weeks and can still turn out the good times, 3rd Keith Balcombe and Stan Cox 24.41, 4th Ian Essex and John Scott 26.11 and 5th our all girl team Sally Page and Brenda Essex 30.01 Woo! that one measly second makes all the difference!
BEST OF THE REST 2 up: Steve Geran and John Limpus (G.S.Stella) 20.54 what are these boys on 3 shreddies in the mornings? Paul Jones and Paul Byford (Crawley CC) 21.22.
BECC/mixed club teams 2up times: George Higgs (BECC) and Richard Browsett (Epsom) 22.53 and Elaine Scott (our triatherlon gold medal winner) and George Vargha (Steyning AC) 26.53
BECC solo times: 1st Paul Gosling 24.18, 2nd Steve Flowers 25.10 and 3rd Neil Garrett 27.11 and 4th.Peter Mitchell (VC Jubilee) 28.45.
BEST OF THE REST solo times: Martin Wilkinson (Sussex Nomads) 24.01
We also had another 2 juniors riding Thomas Leonard (Tuff Fitty Tri Club) 27.01 and John Leonard (Tuff Fitty Tri Club) 27.26
Don't forget everyone we are back on the Washington course next week road works allowing.
Also it's the 'Come & Try It' on the 8th June so tell all your friends, should be another great evening.
The club kit is almost ready, so get your orders in a.s.a.p. see me for an order form if I haven't already given you one, I know that most of you are looking forward to getting some new gear, and this a great opportunity to kit yourself out at a very reasonable price, (we need the minimum order of 5 sets i.e. I top & 1 shorts or 1 skinsuit x 5 to start the ball rolling) so get your pennies out.
Its also great that when we get the new clothing that VC Jubilee our youth development section will be incorporating their logo into our colours and we can really start to feel like one big club, which is important if we want to survive and expand as a club well into the future.
Don't forget Preston Park Track meets every Wednesday during the summer and you can see loads of the VC Jubilee youngsters, Paul Gosling and Anthony Rogers racing every week (and of course lots of others!).
I can tell there is nothing nicer than sitting in the sun watching someone else work hard! Roy, Sally, Keith, Ian and Mike are down there every week helping the kids get their bikes ready and cheering them on and you can get a cuppa and a bun what more can anyone ask?
Last but not least Bob Harber is going to do the National Championship 24 hour race on the 24th July, he recons he is out to beat Keith Balcombe's mileage of 345 by 1 mile, so we all wish him the very best of luck with that, and look forward to reading his report on the web page.

Tuesday 01 June - 10m Washington

Yes we are back on the Washington course, it’s been a long time but we’ve made it!!! A good field 21 riders and some fast times with 2 personal bests being recorded, and Rick and Val Stringer back from their holidays, who could ask for more.
1st was Mike Murray 21.47 looking good for the national on the 6th June, 2nd Charlie Parsons 23.19 still with that laryngitis but starting to feel better and 3rd Jon Hayes 23.53 not bad considering he has just moved house and has been up to his ears in packing cases, 4th Roy Page with a personal best of 24.10 well done.
Keith Balcombe 24.15 this is the fastest he’s been since 2001, Tom Shearn (VC Jubilee) 24.24 one to watch, Stan Cox 25.11 fresh from the dentist, Richard Clowes 25.33 feeling all refreshed after a couple of weeks holidaying with his girlfriend and no bike, Malcolm Law 25.53, John Scott 26.55 he has just picked up Adrian from University, I can’t believe he’s been there a year already and Neil Garrett 27.00, Steve Flowers DNF becuase of his back which he hurt doing the garden a few weeks ago gave out on him again.
BEST OF THE REST: Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) 22.23, Mike Anton (East Grinstead CC) 24.04. Also worth a mention is Anne Henderson (Brighton Phoenix) doing her first time trail ever in 31.00 a personal best, lets hope it did not put her off for good.
How about letting me know what you have been doing outside our events and we can put those results on the web page as well, like Mike Murray won last weeks Worthing event with 21.40, and Matt Howard (VC Jubilee) crashed just before the line at Goodwood nearly taking out Dan Manelfi, ended up 5th, shorts and jersey needed replacing LUCKILY we have new kit coming so not a total loss!
The VC Jubilee gang were out in force over the Bank Holiday weekend, with thrills and spills a plenty, a group of 5 along with Sally and Roy Page went to Herne Hill on the Monday and they WON the team events.
The Preston Park track this week sounded like FUN with 3 people going to hospital one being a VC Jubilee member falling off on his way home, still I think its all-good character building.
Don’t forget the ‘Come & Try It’ next week; I’m looking for accompanying riders.
ALSO COMING SOON the ES Cycle Festival on the 12th and 13th June talent tests and skills challenges which sounds like great fun for the kids, keep look out on the web page for more details.
Get those club kit orders pouring in! we are so close I can almost taste it!

Tuesday 08 June - 3.5m Steyning - COME AND TRY IT!

Well what a night I had riders coming out of my ears and loved every minute, for the two events we had 47 riders 8 in the 3.5 mile event and 39 for the 10 mile (see the 10's results in the next section below).
The weather was good and the wind dropped off as the night went on.
RESULTS for the 3.5mile "Come 7 Try It" race
1st Matt Howard 14 (VC Jubilee) 8.44 which is a new course record,
2nd Peter Mitchell 14 (VC Jubilee) 8.58,
3rd Adam Gent 14 (Sussex Nomads) 9.05,
4th John Leonard 14 (Tuff Fitty) 9.22,
5th Ben Dobbin 14 (VC Jubilee) 9.38,
6th Sophie Coleman 13 (Lewes Wanders) 10.18,
7th Kevin Gill 15 (Worthing Excelsior C.C.) 10.38,
8th Rebecca Gosling 12 (VC Jubilee) 11.16
All the results can be seen on the Full results and times page on our web site.
I would just like to say thanks to everyone who accompanied a junior on the 3.5 mile race, Dick Jones who marshalled at Bramber RAB Rick Stringer for pushing off and John Roberts for starting the race and Sally Page for getting the kids and adults together in some sort of order, and lastly to Keith Balcombe for donating all the prizes.
To give the kids a safe race environment on the open road takes a lot of time and commitment and it’s a real club effort putting it on, and by the feedback we got last night its well worth it.

Tuesday 22 June - 10m Steyning

What a night - dark and miserable, the rain started just before 5pm and got steadily worse as the night worn on.
BUT that did not stop the first joint Brighton Mitre/Brighton Excelsior inter-club evening 10 from starting and although the times were not brilliant and no personal bests were achieved we still all had a jolly albeit moist time. The 11 riders that turned up are very hardy souls and each and every one will get a mention.
The event was won by Charlie Parson (B’ton Excel) 23.44, 2nd Mark Skinner (B’ton Mitre) 23.50, 3rd Nick Haskell (B’ton Mitre) 24.38, 4th Keith Balcombe (B’ton Excel) 24.53, 5th Tom Shearn (VC Jubilee) 25.01, 6th Roy Page (B’ton Excel) 26.19, 7th Simon Roberts (B’ton Excel) 26.21 and 8th Adrian Robins (B’ton Excel) 26.31
BEST OF THE REST: Paul Carruthers (Crawley CC) 24.51, Thomas Leonard 15 (Tuff Fitty) 27.52 and John Leonard 14 (Tuff Fitty) 29.07
After the race we all joined in for a very ‘happy and enthusiastic’ photo and as soon as the shutter clicked they were all gone with more speed than they had shown in the actual race I thought.
Anyway I really believe it is going to be an annual event and must try and remember not to choose the first week of Wimbledon next year!
My thanks to Rick Stringer for pushing off, John Roberts for starting and Frank Blake for supporting the event THE FIRST OF MANY!!!!!
The other week I asked about what you guys are doing in between our club events and this is what has been happening over the last couple of weeks
Bognor Regis open 10 17th June we had 5 clubmen complete the course, Mike Murray 22.01 (he came 3rdd overall), Rob Luff 22.33 Dave Fletcher 23.16 Keith Balcombe 24.24 and Neil Garrett 26.16 if was a very difficult night and felt hard all the way around. Rob was our only rider to improve on his best in last three season.
On Sunday 20th June the VTTA open 25 three of us turned up for that, Charlie Parsons 1.2.37, Alan Bowry 1.9.37 and Neil Garrett 1.10.15, it was a super morning cool and bright, the early riders go the better weather as the wind started to get up about half way through the field.
Keep these results coming its great to keep in touch with what everyone is doing during the season.

Tuesday 29 June - 10m Washington

Well what can I say it was a night of miss-adventure all round. The weather was bright but quite windy so no personal best being beaten.
19 riders rode and 6 non finishers 2 went off course, 1 chain came off, 1 had no energy, 1 had an accident and 1 stopped to help him.
The event was won by Andy Attwood 23.42, 2nd Roy Page, and 3rd Jon Hayes 24.36.
Keith Balcombe 24.47, Tom Roberts 25.16, Simon Roberts 25.27, Alan Bowry 26.24, John Scott 26.38 and Bob Harber 26.58 Paul Gosling DNF his chain came off.
BEST OF THE REST: Roger Smith (VC Etoile) 22.02, Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) 22.59, Katy Moore 17 (Private) did well to keep under evens with 29.48, especially as she went slightly off course by going up the dead end at the turn.
Tim Woodman (Phoenix Tri Club) had just reached the turn and was at the RAB. before he rejoined the A24 when he slipped on some gravel in the road and fell heavily hitting his head, he was up and about but very wobbly and an ambulance was called, his friend and club mate Tony Wright stayed with him until they came and then rode back to the car park before going to the hospital to see how he was, I don’t think it was too serious, but with a hit on the head its best to be safe than sorry, luckily he was wearing a helmet which would have helped keep the damage down. My thanks to Stan for going down to the turn and picking up Tim’s bike.
We have news about what you guys have been doing while you are not with us; Jon Hayes, Paul Gosling and George Higgs have all been having fun with Road Racing with Jon getting 4th in the Lewes Crits. No 1, on the 3rd June and 2nd at Wivelsfield H/C on 24th June and was only beaten by an elite category rider. Paul Gosling came 6th in the Lewes Crits. No 2 on 10th June and 6th at Wivelsfeld H/C on 24th June. George Higgs came 6th in the Lewes Crits. No 1 and 3rd in the Lewes Crits. No 3 on 17th June and overall for the 3 races George finished 4th, so well done to you all.
Jon also did 2.13.11 in the SCCU 50 on Sunday 27th June.
Roy Page and Keith Balcombe went up and did the Shaftsbury Middlemarkers 25 event on Saturday 26th June; Roy did a personal best of 1.1.32 and Keith 1.2.38 so again well done.
Keep these results and information coming.

Andy Attwood 24.19, Roy Page 24.25, Tom Shearn (VC Jubilee) 24.46, Jon Hayes 24.47 and Stan Cox 24.53. Keith Balcombe 25.00, Tom Roberts 25.36, Adrian Robins 25.42, Peter Mitchell (VC Jubilee) 26.41, Neil Garrett 26.50, John Scott 26.59 and Elaine Scott 27.18.

Thanks to John Roberts for starting the event and Dick Jones for pushing off.
Just to let you all know that Tim Woodman (Phoenix Tri) is doing OK and managed to get to Switzerland albeit as a spectator last weekend.

HOT NEWS
Elaine Scott also went to Lausanne in Switzerland for the European Triathlete Championships unfortunately due to a printing error/misprint the 1st programme said only 7 laps were needed and in a later edition it said 8 laps, she only did 7 and was disqualified, which is very upsetting all round. But our good friend George Vargha (Steyning AC) came 3rd in his age category and got a bronze medal (we can bask in his reflexive glory).
Hove Park this Friday for anyone wanting to go and have a look, VC Jubilee riders, Jon Hayes and Paul Gosling should be there and possible Anthony Rogers and George Higgs, it’s a good evenings sport. Next and last one is on 6th August.
Tour of Litchfield near Birmingham last weekend Peter Mitchell and Matt Howard went up to compete, 3 races in total, Pete came 28th (1st race) 12th (2nd race) and 14th (3rd race) in the under 14’s.
Matt came 35th (1st race) 12th (2nd race) and 21st (3rd race) under 16’s the weather was wet and windy and both were not put off or involved (thankfully) the big crash in the 1st race.
They are both going to Horton Kirby in Kent this weekend, so good luck to them and don’t forget to tell me how you got on.
Preston Track was cancelled last night, (I am not surprised) so no thrills and spills to report.
PLEASE don’t forget to keep me updated on your achievements we all like to read about who is doing what and when.
And I think a big bar of chocolate from Charlie Parsons next week is in order (he knows what I mean).
Last but not least don’t forget we are incorporating the Club 25 Championship into our Open 25 on 1st August this MUST be entered in advance see Keith Balcombe who is organizing it for the club for details or just send him your entry form, he is also looking for help on the day, so contact him on Balcombe@Onetel.net.uk and offer your services if you can.

Tuesday 13 July - 10m Wasinghton

Another dry and windy night greeted us yesterday. There was a car accident at Washington RAB and we wondered for a while whether we could hold the event, but both Stan and Mike Anton went down to the RAB and spoke to the police who said it would be OK for us to continue.
17 riders turned up which considering the Mitre had their 25 down the road was a good turnout.
1st was Paul Gosling 23.33, 2nd was Tom Shearn (VC Jubilee) 24.14, and 3rd Stan Cox 24.42. Keith Balcombe 24.50, Alan Bowry 25.51, John Scott 26.55, Bob Harber 27.00. and Elaine Scott 28.09.
BEST OF THE REST: Steve Geran (GS Stella) 21.20, Trevor Montague (Crawley Whrs) 23.13.
Mike Anton took some photos on the night and we look forward to seeing them in due course. Thanks to him and Stan for sorting out the accident details and John Scot and Bob Harber for pushing off until their time came. Rick Stinger was poorly so get better soon.
Don’t forget next week is the 2 up incorporating our Grand Prix Des Gentlemen race, so it’s a good test for those of you going to the Duo in September to practise and also another change for the youngsters to have an accompanied race, although remember this time you must find your own partners.
Also don’t forget to get your entries into Keith for the club open on the 1st August, it closes next Tuesday.

Tuesday 20 July - 10m Steyning - 2 up (Grand Prix de Gentleman style)

A lovely evening brought out the riders on Tuesday with 31 joining in the fun. We had 5 x 2 up’s, 1 x 3 up and 18 solos, but only one Grand Prix des Gentleman racing team, which was a pity as I really thought it would give the youngsters another chance to ride on the open road with an accompanying adult, giving the parents/guardians a little extra peace of mind.
1st in the Grand Prix de Gentlemen race Tom Van Heeke (VC Jubilee) and Keith Balcombe 31.15 well done to them.
1st in the 2 up race Pete Mitchell and Matt Howard (both VC Jubilee) 25.03 well done lads.
1st of the solos Rob Luff 22.54, 2nd Charlie Parsons 23.16, 3rd Jon Hayes 24.07, 4th Steve Flowers 25.09, Tom Roberts 25.14, Alan Bowry 25.36, Adrian Robins and Simon Roberts both did 25.38, Bob Harber 26.19 and Neil Garrett 27.49. Stan Cox DNF.
BEST OF THE REST - 2 ups: Steve Garan and Mark Jones (both GS Stella) 20.29 John Limpus (GS Stella) and Mike Murray 21.23
BEST OF THE REST - Solo’s: Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) 22.12, Tim Holmes (Brighton Mitre) 23.09
Elaine Scott was joined by George Vargha and Adrian Brown (both Steyning AC) in a 3 up and did 24.31.
Only 2 more races to go and the season’s over, it has just flown by this year, although I seem to recall saying that same thing last year, must be my age the times goes so quickly.
It’s the Club Open 25 on the 1st August and the annual picnic and BBQ afterwards in the White Lion, Thakeham YUM YUM!!!

Tuesday 27 July - 10m Washington

Another glorious evening, which turned into an almost a perfect float night, with PB’s being broken left and right. 23 Riders with one 2 up, getting ready for the Duo I think!
1st Mike Murray 21.23, 2nd George Higgs 21.55, 3rd Dave Fletcher 22.19, 4th Charlie Parson 22.23 that is a PB by 2 secs.
Jones Hayes 23.28, which is a PB by 25 secs, Tom Roberts 23.30, Paul Gosling 23.43 sadly, he went off course, Simon Roberts 24.11, Keith Balcombe 24.16 and Alan Bowry 24.44
BEST OF THE REST: Mark Jones and Steve Geran (GS Stella) doing a 2up did a super time 20.14, Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) 21.31Chris Hodge (GS Stella) 22.27. What do these Stella boys have for breakfast cos Keith and me want a bowl full each every morning!
What has happened to Roy Page, well he was on holiday in France with Sally visiting their friend Blaise when out on a bike ride in the Alps when he was clipped by a van, thrown into the air onto a car and landed eventually in the road, luckily he did not break anything (how lucky is that I hear you all gasp) but is very badly bruised and battered and has hurt his neck so will not be racing for a while.
This proves a good point that I think is worth mentioning people don’t bounce very well, and no matter how careful we are, as cyclists we are very vulnerable and his helmet really saved him from much worse injury, we all wish him good luck and a very speedy recovery.
Now on to Bob Harber’s 24 hour race, he finished and has survived to tell the tale, with a provisional distance of 329 miles although he thinks he did nearer 350 mile, and he trying to sort out with the organisers a missed dog leg, He punchered 3 times and on each occasion a following car stopped and sat him down and changed the tyre for him and sent him on his way, Bob says the organization was fantastic and he is looking forward to doing another one next year, although he is sick of rice pudding and peaches.
The penultimate track meeting down at Preston Park saw Matt join the senior riders and doing very well for a first timer, most of the normal suspects were there including Anthony, Pete, Ryan and Becky, along with Roy and Sally, Keith, Ian and Mike, mums and dads a plenty. And some new VC Jubilee members too. Sounds like lovely evening in the sun. Don’t forget it’s the last evening 10 and the last Preston Park track meeting next week lets go out with a bumper crowd.

Sunday 1 August - 25m Ashurst - OPEN EVENT and BBQ
(including our rescheduled Club Championships)

What a beautiful day sunny warm but with a deceptive little wind that seemed to be against you not matter which way you were heading, still a very good day for the Brighton Excelsior CC Open TT.
Quite a small field only 58 riders but some very good times with 10 riders getting under the hour.
The winner was Paul Woodman (In Gear) with an excellent 56.28, 2nd Paul Jones (Crawley CC) 57.51 and 3rd our good friend Steve Woodbridge (G.S. Stella) 57.52.
1st Lady Angela Nainby (East Grinstead CC) with 1.04.43.
1st Vet Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) with an astonishing +21.11

I am sure the full results will appear on the web page in due course and the result sheet will be coming to a post box near you soon.
How did our lads do in the club championship? Is the question I am sure you are all asking and here are the results:-
1st Mike Murray 59.04, 2nd Rob Luff 1.00.26, 3rd Andy Attwood 1.02.42, 4th Paul Gosling 1.03.54, 5th on Hayes 1.04.53, 6th Simon Roberts 1.05.34, 7th new man Stuart White 1.05.52, 8th Alan Bowry 1.06.14, 9th John Scott 1.10.20 and 10th Elaine Scott 1.11.50.
With 10 riders its about the best club champs we have had for years so well done to you all.
Keith would like to say thanks go to Rick Stringer for pushing off and then rushing back to the HQ to help Val run the canteen, thanks also to Stan Cox, Dick Jones, Steve Flowers, Bob Harber and Chris Beckingham for marshalling, and Su Balcombe and Mike Kilby (Lewes Wanderers) for the timekeeping.
I took a couple of photos for the web page and it was almost harder getting Dick in the line up than doing the event.

PICNIC & B-B-Q

The good weather extended right through into the evening and the sun block was needed in the afternoon for our annual picnic and BBQ at the White Lion, Thakeham.
The Landlord and staff made us at home, and the food and drink was very welcome, and it was great to see old mates and catch up with the gossip.
All the salad came from Dick allotment and was delicious.
I saw Val taking loads of photos so we might see ourselves on the web page before too long.
Lovely to see Matt Howard and his Mum and Dad there, along side Adrian and Ruth Lusaka and their 4 children, and as was Lyndon wife Ayla and Erym and great news that she is pregnant again and moving abroad for a few years with Lyndon, so good luck to them and don’t forget to keep in touch.
Our thanks go to Dick Jones for organising the picnic and looking after us all socially for the last year, and Keith Balcombe for organising the Open Event.

Tuesday 3 August - 10m Steyning

Another dry evening although it was very humid and with the shadow of a storm threat, but in the end it stayed dry for the last event of the season.
Great turn out with 32 riders 14 from BECC.
1st George Higgs 22.43, 2nd Charlie Parsons 23.13, 3rd Andy Attwood 23.21.
Paul Gosling 23.47, Tom Roberts 24.01, Jon Hayes 24.25, Keith Balcombe 25.03, Stan Cox 25.17, Bob Harber 25.18, Alan Bowry 25.27, John Scott 26.24, Neil Garrett 28.47, Adrian Scott 29.18, and Elaine Scott 29.25.
It was smashing to see Adrian Scott home from University for the summer doing our last evening 10.
Best of the rest: Russell McLean 21.42 Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) 22.15
My thanks to Rick for pushing off during the season and John Roberts for doing the start timing, and its always nice to see Arthur Rayner who has come out to a few races during the summer.
Don’t forget that Wednesday club night really gets going again next week, at the AOAC, we hope to see some/most/a few of you each week, from 8.00pm.
The Christmas ride and lunch details will appear on the web page very soon, and is really a date for your diary.
Winter training should be starting in late October early November with 3 rolling starting points so that everyone should be happy.
The Duo de Normond weekend is 4th & 5th September and is a great chance to race on closed roads in France, with a following car and crowds clapping and cheering you all the way, everyone has a great time, before, during and after the main race.
My thanks to Sally Page for keeping the web page up to date, she does a grand job, and I know via feedback it’s well received and is a good way for old members to keep in touch with what we are all doing.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Next season the CTT will be introducing Risk Assessments for ALL club events and the evening races must change.
We will HAVE to provide marshals every week, this will mean that some sort of rota will have to be worked out and we must all take a turn or the evening 10’s will cease to be held, all clubs are going to have to comply with these rules, and we can not risk running even one event without following the rules
I will need lots of help from next year, and will be looking for possibly 5 marshals for the Washington course and 3 marshals for the Steyning course.

Well don’t forget the Hill climb on the 10th October 11am start on the Steyning Bostal and all into the pub for lunch afterwards
I hope to see many of you on various starting lines before the end of the open season, which still has a few months to go.
Take care of yourselves and keep your heads up!

Sunday 10 October - 1m Steyning Bostal - HILL CLIMB

Sorry the write-up has taken some time, but I have had a holiday in between the event and the report, so my brains not in top gear.
Well the last event of our full and busy ‘club event’ year.
15 riders come and joined in the fun on what was a very pleasant morning.
And what a race it was! I don’t normally put another club’s rider first but at 4.16 I do think that Ishmael Burdeau from B’ton Mitre deserves a mention the open record for this course is only 4.11 that shows what a good ride that was - so well done to him.
The event was won by Mike Murray 4.50, George Higgs 2nd with 4.57 and Robin Harris (club hill climb record holder) 3rd with 4.58
Tom Roberts 5.11, Jon Hayes and Paul Gosling both on 5.22, Charlie Parsons 5.25, Richard Clowes 5.40, Roy Page 5.57 Elaine Scott 6.54 and Sally Page 9.39.
Well done to you all great turn out.
Best or the rest: Ishmael Burdean (B’ton Mitre) 4.16, Stuart Fahay (B’ton Mitre) Tim Holmes (B’ton Mitre) 5.16, Jay Chisnell (B’ton Mitre) 6.39
When I got to the top of the hill the Mitre boys where having a breather from their training run and so a few of them decided when I said it was the hill climb to have a good, it was great to see them, that’s the good thing about club events (and I really hope that the new Risk Assessments don’t eventually destroy) is that they are so informal and anyone from any club can just stop by and have a go, without having to plan and register weeks in advance.
This really is the end of the season now Guys and the next time we meet with be the hopefully at the Cyclo Cross in Wild Park on the 21st November we could still do with some help, if anyone is interested, some of you I know are going to the SCA lunch on the 14th November tickets from Andy Attwood, yummy food made by Vanessa Attwood and helped in a small way my me, and don’t forget to bring your own drinks
Christmas lunch on the 19th December tickets from Rick Stringer or maybe down the club room some Wednesday evening, it was very jolly last week, ‘cos lots of us turned up along with a new member Dave Pegler, so welcome to him.
I would like to wish you all a very jolly Christmas and the happiest of New Years, so until 1st January 2005 at 11am outside Hamm Farm for the BECC New Years day 10, I will say Good Bye and safe cycling.
