Tuesday 7 May - 10m Steyning

After a shaky start the Brighton Excelsior evening series got under way on 7/5/02 with a turn out of 22 riders. The weather couldn't have been better after recent weeks a still warm night. Tuesday 14 May - 16.5m Steyning

We were not sure if the road works just south of the Washington RAB. would be finished, so before the event Keith went around the course to double check. Everything was clear so the 16.5 miles was on!! 16 riders joined us this evening for the 16 ½ the weather was dry but very windy. The event was won by Mike Murray 40.26 with Dave Fletcher 42.02 in second place. Only seconds separated Charlie Parsons 44.06 and Stan Cox 44.17. New Member Paul Gosling had a good ride with 47.53; Paul is hoping to do some Road Racing so look out Tom Roberts.

Tuesday 21 May - 10m Steyning

On a dark, rainy and very windy evening we held our3rd evening time trial And 7-brave/mad riders took part. The times were slow which reflected the weather and Dan, I almost had to chase around the field to get him to join in Mike Murray kept up his unbeaten record and won the event with 23.55, with Dan coming 2nd with 25.18, Neil was 3rd on 25.59 and Keith finished but would prefer not to talk about his time. Stan took pictures with his new digital camera, which turned out brilliant
BEST OF THE REST: Tristan Court 22.38 and he won the Toilet Paper Trophy for the 2nd year running well done to him (Don't let any tell Brighton Excel is cheap!)

Tuesday 11 June - 3.5m and 10m Steyning

3.5m - GOLDEN JUBILEE COME AND TRY IT!
I was uncertain how this years Come & Try It event would go, we had our new Golden Jubilee 3.5 mile course GS997, which was being held as an accompanied junior race before the main evening 10, and as with all new events it all depended on significant young riders turning up to make the event viable.
Well we had 9 of the very best young riders turn up and ride, they came from V.C. Jubilee, Sussex Nomads, Preston Park and Brighton Excelsior C.C.'s own Ryan Attwood completing the field.
It was won by Matthew Howard V.C. Jubilee with an excellent 11.05 which is now the new course record, 2nd Adam Gent Sussex Nomads 11.08, 3rd Sophie Coleman Preston Park 11.18 (girl power), 4th Jack Howlett V.C. Jubilee 11.20, 5th Ryan Attwood Brighton Excelsior C.C. 11.28, 6th Kevin Gill private rider 11.34, 7th Ben Dobbin V.C. Jubilee 11.49, 8th David Adcock V.C. Jubilee xxx and 9th Daniel Gerrey V.C. Jubilee 14.25
Well done to all the young riders and a BIG THANK YOU to all the senior supporters who after accompanying the juniors went on to ride the evening 10 race.
The prizes came from Halfords Lewes Road, Keith Balcombe and the cup from Andy Attwood, thanks to them for their supports.
We will be running the event next year so hopefully Matthew will come back and defend his title.
The rain held off until the junior's race had finished which was an added bonus.

10m
Although the senior race was a little over shadowed by the junior's this week, we still had 19 riders turn up. Unfortunately the rain, which favoured the youngsters, did not hold out for the main event so everyone got very wet.
It was won by Dave Fletcher 24.04, with Stan Cox coming 2nd on 24.49, and Charlie Parsons 3rd with 25.23.
It was super to see Pete Parsons back in the saddle after not being very well for a while and great to also see Elaine and Adrian Scott for the first time this year, we have missed you all.
BEST OF THE REST: Tristan Court Brighton Mitre 21.59, Steve Geran V.C. Bayeux 22.59
All I can say is that I am looking forward to September for an Indian summer cos' I feel we won't get much of a real one!

Tuesday 18 June - 25m Ashurst

After a very rainy day it turned into a dry and very windy evening and 13 brave riders turned up for our evening 25, on the G25/93, which is quite sporting to say the least.
The times reflected the windy conditions and Dave Fletcher won it with a very respectable 1.00.38, with Andy Attwood coming 2nd on 1.04.04, and Neil Garrett 3rd storming home with 1.06.21, and Dan Maskell 4th on 1.07.37.
Poor old Mike Murray had a puncture even before he started, and Paul Gosling did not finish, as he felt washed out after racing on Sunday.
John Scott who did a triathlon over the weekend finished on 1.22.26, and said he felt very tired.
BEST OF THE REST: Steve Woodbridge G.S.Stella 58.11, and Nick Haskell B’ton Mitre 1.06.57

Tuesday 25 June - 10m Steyning

What a beautiful evening for things to go wrong.
I am sorry to report that tonight one of the riders from Brighton Mitre C.C. Rupert Robin, had an accident just over half way around the course, he tried to head butt a parked white van and had to be taken to Worthing Hospital in an ambulance, I have phoned the hospital this morning and he had a good night and was still asleep, our thoughts are with him, his wife and children, and everyone at Brighton Excelsior wishes him a full and speedy recovery.
I will keep you informed of his progress via the web page as the days go by.
Loads of riders stopped to see if they could help, and some went back after wards to do what they could, which was super, and just proves what I have always said "You are a very caring bunch of people", so a BIG thanks to all of them.
The results for the rest of the field are as follows:
Dave Fletcher won it with a 22.36, and Andy Attwood 2nd on 23.30, Neil Garrett 3rd on 24.35, Robin Harris 4th on 24.57 and Keith Balcombe 5th on 24.57.
Dan Maskell did a 2-up with Geoff Boore (Sussex Nomads) and they did a 25.46
BEST OF THE REST: Tristan Court (B’ton Mitre) 21.27, Steve Woodbridge (G.S.Stella) 22.08

REMEMBER ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!!

Update 26/6/2002

Just to update the situation with Rupert Robin he has compressed one of his vertebra and is totally black and blue, but he will make a full recovery.
He is having physiotherapy and the sooner he is able to move the sooner he will be home, although not on the bike for a while he thinks.
He sounds very bright all things considering!
Our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Tuesday 2 July - 10m West Grinstead

The rain in Sussex falls mainly on the time trialist!
We all met at Buck Barn cross roads behind the old garage and down came the rain, but despite everyone getting colder and wetter, we had a good time as everyone was in the mood for a chat, and quite a few people turned up, and almost everyone signed on for the Club Championship 25 this Sunday 7th starting at 8.10am
Dave, Mike, Keith, Stan, Dan, Paul & Andy all paid 75p which is ½ price entry and even Steve Flowers (Sussex Nomads) paid in advance to ride, (they thought I was mean because I made him pay full price) I was determined for the evening not to be a total waste! So at least we should have a good field on Sunday.
Pete Parsons come out and not that I wish to cast aspersions on his good name but he did already have his number with him for the 2nd time this season! I think he knows what I mean.
Paul Gosling wanted to try out his new bike and I think would have ridden in the snow, but good sense won the day and we all went home cold and wet but still having had a laugh.
Well we are all looking forward to Sunday, which will take place even if I have to run around the course with an umbrella.

Just to let everyone know that Rupert Robin is now in a body brace and has been transfered to Sutherland Hospital, hopefully he will be home soon and they think he will be in pain (getting less we hope with the passage of time!) for about 3 months.

Sunday 7 July - 25m Ashurst - CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

I know I am starting to sound like Michael Fish doing the weather forecast, but - What a day! It started with rain and then just got windier, as the rain eased off. 12 brave and foolhardy rider’s came along to take part in this year club champs’.
Our NEW CHAMPION is Mike Murray who did won the event with a 1.1.59 Hooray! Hooray!
Dave Fletcher was 2nd with a 1.2.49, and Andy Attwood 3rd on 1.5.05 Stan Cox 4th on 1.6.34 and Dan Maskell 5th on 1.9.02 and Paul Gosling riding his new bike was 6th 1.11.25.
Keith Balcombe romped home to claim the ‘lantern rouge’ with a 1.13.43.
I call that 75p well spent by anyone’s standards and we look forward to next year’s event with baited breath.
BEST OF THE REST: Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley) 1.2.14, Robert Coleman (Epson C.C.) 1.8.02 Steve Flowers (Central Sx.) and a staunch supporter of Brighton Excel events did a 1.8.32
The photo session at the end of the race, nearly ended with me on my bum in a big muddy puddle, only my nimble footedness kept me upright, still I got a nice photo and a few laughs!

The sun shines on these who wait long enough.
We finally held an event on the G10/52, and although only 11 riders turned out to compete we managed to get some good times.

Well tonight was almost a non-starter due to lack of interest
Come on you cyclist let’s dust of our wheels and get a ride in before the end of the season!!!!
7 Riders only turned up for the event and Mike Murray won it with a 22.53, Neil Garrett 2nd on 24.56 Keith Balcombe 3rd on 25.10

ONLY 2 MORE RIDES IN THE EVENING 10 SERIES, SO THERE IS JUST TIME FOR A PERSONAL BEST
It was lovely to see Val after the event, looking so well, after being taken poorly in Russia.

Tuesday 30 July - 10m Steyning

With only 2 ride left in what has been a slow but very close season we kicked off tonight with 17 riders
Mike Murray won it with 21.53 (he is having a cracking season!) Dave Fletcher 2nd on 22.41, Charlie Parson 3rd with 23.23, Dan Maskell 4th with 23.56, Neil Garrett 5th 24.05, and with only a fag paper between them Stan Cox was 6th with 24.08, Keith Balcombe 7th 24.20, Robin Harris 8th on 24.23 and Elaine Scott 9th on 28.28
BEST OF THE REST: Tristan Court (B'ton Mitre) 21.15, Steve Woodbridge (G.S.Stella) 21.49
It was lovely to see Lisa Thompson again she had a crash a few weeks ago and rode a good race with a very badly bruised wrist and ended doing a 25.09 .
Its always nice when riders from other clubs join us, and they are assured a warm and friendly welcome when they arrive, usually along the lines of "Hello you old B...er what are you doing here!"
We have regulars that turn up most weeks like Steve Flowers and Tristan Court and the really nice thing about cycling is that the riders are so friendly and there is so much social mixing between clubs, of cause there is completion which is why we are all here but off the bike friendships grow and trips are planned the Duo de Normand is a prime example of what I mean.

Sunday 4 August - 25m Ashurst - OPEN EVENT

The day of our Open 25 started very early in the morning, with Keith and me putting signs up around the course, and the weather looked as if it could go either way, with a very fine misty drizzle.
The headquarters at Steyning Village Hall is always a pleasure to use and the caretaker is such a gentleman and can't do enough for us.
We only had one tandem enter this year, which were Mark Jones and John Limpus who nevertheless did a very good time of 53.03
The senior event was won by Steve Woodbridge (G.S.Stella) 56.52, 2nd was Gary Wells (Charlottville C.C.) 57.32 and 3rd was Mark Brambleby (Feltham R.C.) on 57.33
Vets on Standard were 1st Steve Avely (Tooting B.C.) +19.01, 2nd was Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) +18.56, and 3rd was Charles Ayson (34th Nomads) with +18.44
Nikki Hunt won the ladies with 1.07.38
G.S.Stella won the Team prize with 2.58.45 and they were Andy Payne 1.01.15, Tom Walker 1.00.38 and Steve Woodbridge 56.52
Fastest in the club was Stan Cox with 1.05.27, then Neil Garrett 1.07.56, Ian Essex 1.08.08 and Tom Roberts 1.08.59, well done lads, poor Mike Murray punchered.
After pushing off Rick Stringer raced back to the hall to help Val with the canteen, and along with the marshals Chris, Dick and Roger Hughes, all did over and above the call of duty.
Afterwards we all met at the Red Lion at Thakham for our annual picnic, we borrowed Andy and Vanessa's marquee under which John (Dick's friend) played the afternoon away and made the whole event go with a swing.
Some VC Jubilee members and their families joined us, and I can say from experience they all have very good appetites.
It is always lovely to see old friends in a social setting. Harry Featherstone and his wife, Adrian Loska and his family, the kiddies are so sweet and showed real promise on their little bikes, were just a few of the people that helped make a good day extra special.
The bar b que was very well received and I even managed to sell a couple of polo shirts, so all in all a good day, the weather which had threatened most of the day stayed dry almost until the end and we went home, having had a thoroughly nice time, and looking forward to next year.
I feel an extra big thank you should go to Keith Balcombe for organizing the event and Dick Jones for organizing the picnic where would we be without you guys!!!!!
See some pictures of the picnic this race.

Tuesday 6 August - 10m Steyning

24 riders come along, and the times were fast
Mike Murray won it with 23.11, Charlie Parsons as 2nd with 23.19, Stan Cox 3rd with 24.02, 4th was Keith Balcombe with 24.17, Neil Garrett 5th 24.27, Paul Gosling 6th 24.54. Elaine Scott beat Sally Page in the "battle of the ladies".
BEST OF THE REST: Tristan Court (B'ton Mitre) did a superb ride 20.55 and Steve Woodbridge (G.S.Stella) 21.24; it was nice to see Tony Gould again on his trike 25.15.
It was a real pleasure to see Rick Stringer back on his bike doing a very respectable 27.10 he is in training for the Duo de Normand which he is doing with Leon Budgen in September.
Roy and Sally page both rode the last race; Roy also is in training for the Duo, which he is doing with Keith.
The rest of our Duo pairs are as follows: -
Charlie Parson & Stan Cox, Mike Murray & Andy Attwood, Elaine Scott & Ian Essex
Some of the Mitre boys are also going so we wish then all well and hope they have a super weekend - don't forget to let me know how you do so that we can put it on the web page!!

Neil Garrett and Roger Hughes are both competing in this year's S.C.A. 12 hour race on Sunday 11th August, both need any support you can give them.
Well it's been a funny old season bad weather, road works, accidents, we have had it all! and with only the Hill Climb to go on the 13th October to go I think we have all pulled together to make it a good one despite everything and the last race turned out to be one of the best weather wise, I even took my cardigan off!!! We all went to the pub afterwards and there are some pictures on the web page so that you can see us having a good time

Sunday 13 October - 1m Steyning Bostal

Well the last event of the 2002 season came with very wet and windy accessories. And the weather kept all but the very keen away (and I don’t blame them!)
The race was won by Tom Roberts with 5.24 which was excellent considering the conditions, 2nd was Robin Harris only 4 second’s behind on 5.28.
Only one second separated 3rd Dave Fletcher on 5.51 and 4th Paul Gosling on 5.52. Roy Page was 5th on 6.19 and Matthew Howard (VC Jubilee) was 6th only 10 seconds behind Roy on 6.29 and Sally Page was 7th on 9.39
Well done everyone who took part, I hope everyone has a good Christmas, and that the winter training goes well.
See you on the line on 1st January 2003, for our 10 mile time trial race which starts at 11am on the G10/97 it’s a good way to get rid of a hangover and we go to the pub in Steyning afterwards for lunch, its great to meet up with old friends again.
